Bulk identification — PLM analysis under UKAS 17025
Bulk samples are analysed by polarised light microscopy with dispersion staining, in accordance with HSG 248: Asbestos — The Analysts' Guide. The procedure identifies the six regulated asbestos fibre types (chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite and anthophyllite) and confirms the presence or absence of asbestos in the matrix. Each result is issued as a UKAS-endorsed signed certificate of analysis, with full traceability from sample receipt through preparation, examination, identification and reporting.
Air monitoring — PCM fibre counting
Airborne asbestos fibre counts are performed by phase contrast microscopy under UKAS 17025, supporting four key applications: leak air monitoring around live enclosures, background and reassurance monitoring before reoccupation, personal air monitoring of operatives, and final clearance. Results are available within hours of sampling for time-critical projects, with calibrated sampling pumps and traceable filter cassettes throughout.
Four-stage clearance certification
Following licensed asbestos removal, we deliver the four-stage clearance procedure: (1) preliminary check of site condition and paperwork, (2) thorough visual inspection inside the enclosure, (3) air monitoring and clearance sampling, and (4) final assessment post-enclosure dismantling. A Certificate of Reoccupation is issued on successful completion, signed by a competent analyst working under UKAS accreditation — the document insurers, principal contractors and duty holders need to release the area back to normal use.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
What is UKAS asbestos analysis?+
Analysis carried out by a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). UKAS accreditation is the only formally recognised evidence in the UK that an asbestos laboratory has been independently assessed as technically competent.
Why does UKAS accreditation matter?+
It's the only universally accepted standard for asbestos sample analysis under HSG 248. Reports without UKAS accreditation are not normally accepted by regulators, insurers, principal designers or local authorities.
What types of UKAS analysis do you provide?+
Bulk identification by polarised light microscopy (PLM), airborne fibre counting by phase contrast microscopy (PCM) and four-stage clearance certification following licensed asbestos removal.
How long does UKAS asbestos analysis take?+
Standard turnaround for bulk PLM is 24–48 hours from sample receipt. Same-day rush analysis is available where the works programme requires it, and air monitoring results can be reported within hours of sampling.
How much does UKAS asbestos analysis cost?+
Bulk PLM analysis is typically £15–£25 per sample under a sampling programme. Standalone single-sample testing with attendance and reporting starts from £60 + VAT all-inclusive.
Do you provide air monitoring and clearance certificates?+
Yes. We undertake leak air monitoring, reassurance air monitoring, personal air monitoring and the four-stage clearance procedure following licensed asbestos removal works, all under UKAS accreditation.
