Overview
Soffits, fascias and bargeboards in UK housing from the 1950s–1980s are commonly asbestos cement or, less frequently, asbestos insulating board. Cement soffits weather and can develop surface fibre release; AIB soffits are higher risk and require careful handling.

Chrysotile is the most commonly identified fibre in this material.
Visual inspection alone cannot confirm the presence or type of asbestos. Laboratory analysis is required.

Cement soffits are lower risk if intact; AIB soffits are higher risk. External weathering, bird damage and DIY removal are the main exposure routes.
