For an occupied unit, a management survey plus a written management plan is usually the proportionate route — the material is often in reasonable condition and safest left undisturbed and monitored.

If a unit is being stripped out, re-clad or demolished, a refurbishment and demolition survey is needed instead, and the scope should be agreed with whoever is designing the works.

Older village property
